  9. I know this file is a little old, but I thought it would at least provoke
  10. some more 'discussion' on the subject of whether life exists beyond our
  11. planet. ;)

  13.                   "SETI  RECEIVES  A  SIGNAL?"

  16. A  REMARKABLE  REPORT

  18. On Saturday the 10th of February 1996, at approximately 7:05 am, 
  19. a report was aired on BBC Radio 5 Live's morning news that should 
  20. have stunned the world into silence.  A report so profound that it 
  21. should have entirely changed the human races attitude to the world
  22. in which we live, and forever changed our perception of life, the 
  23. universe, and well, everything!  The report stated that the SETI 
  24. (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) project had picked up 
  25. an unusual signal coming from one of the planets that had recently
  26. been discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope.  The signal was 
  27. believed to be artificial in nature.

  29. Now a story of this magnitude should have been all across the 
  30. worlds media within a matter of hours.  Experts should have been 
  31. dragged from their weekend relaxation to give their insightful 
  32. analysis on this most remarkable of events.  The content hungry, 
  33. all consuming, rolling news networks now in existence should have 
  34. provided wall to wall media coverage, 24 hours a day for a 
  35. captivated audience, because at last it would be official that the
  36. human race is not alone.

  38. With the above in mind it will undoubtedly come as a shock to some
  39. readers that apart from the BBC, I have only been able to find two
  40. other sources that reported what should have been the most 
  41. remarkable event in the history of the human race.  So why was this
  42. report not more widely covered by the mainstream news media?  Was 
  43. it a hoax, false information, a false alarm, or was there something
  44. more sinister behind the distinct lack of coverage?  In my opinion 
  45. these questions needed to be answered, so following in the footsteps 
  46. of countless other intrepid investigators before me, I set off in 
  47. pursuit of the truth.

  50. EARTH LISTENS TO MARS

  52. Strange as it may seem, reports of signals being received from outer
  53. space are not as unusual as they at first may sound.  The first 
  54. report comes from the father of radio himself, Marconi, who whilst
  55. experimenting with his new invention managed to pick up a series of
  56. coded signals that appeared to be similar to Morse code.  Despite 
  57. intensive study these signals could not be decoded, and after 
  58. racking his brains Marconi's only possible explanation was that they
  59. had to have originated from space.  It was therefore a very 
  60. surprised and somewhat bemused American press who heard the 
  61. announcement in New York by J.C.H. MacBeth, the London Manager for 
  62. the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company, that the Earth was in the 
  63. process of communicating with beings from the planet Mars!

  65. Needless to say the signals received by Marconi have still not been
  66. explained to this day, but they did, in part, inspire the now 
  67. almost forgotten "Listening In" project during the summer of 1924. 
  68. The aim of this project was to silence all terrestrial radio 
  69. communications for 5 minutes on the hour, every hour, for a period 
  70. of two days during Mars' closest approach to the Earth. This would 
  71. hopefully create the optimum conditions to listen for any radio 
  72. broadcasts that may come from the red planet.  The project utilized 
  73. the newly developed "radio photo message continuous recording 
  74. machine", which produced flashes of light which were then recorded 
  75. on film whenever an incoming message was detected.

  77. After 36 hours of recording, the film was developed and Francis 
  78. Jenkins, the machines inventor, told a stunned press conference 
  79. that the device had indeed received signals and that in addition to
  80. a fairly regular arrangement of dots and dashes the film also 
  81. showed "a repetition at intervals of about a half hour what appears
  82. to be a human face, and it's a freak which we can't explain". What
  83. was surprising about this project was that it was fully supported 
  84. by the United States Government, who used all of their diplomatic 
  85. influence to try to persuade other countries to observe the radio 
  86. silence.  This government support does, of course, not tend to 
  87. support the current vogue theories of cover-ups and misinformation 
  88. campaigns, but then again 1924 was before Roswell.

  91. THE VOICE OF GLON

  93. All of these reports almost inevitably involve only a few witnesses
  94. or individuals working alone, however there is one report of a 
  95. signal from space that was witnessed by literally millions. On the
  96. evening of the 26th of November 1977, viewers of TVS, a regional TV
  97. station in England, and listeners of LBC, a regional radio station 
  98. in London, were amazed when their normal programming was interrupted
  99. by the "Voice of Glon" from the "Asteron Galactic Command".  Glon, 
  100. who claimed to be broadcasting from space, went on to say how 
  101. disappointed he was by the human races stewardship of the planet 
  102. Earth, and in a very similar vein to many of today's abduction 
  103. accounts, Glon told a stunned audience that our planet was only 
  104. decades away from destruction.  The broadcast was heard over a 
  105. large part of southern England with the result that police 
  106. switchboards were swamped with calls from the general public who 
  107. were alarmed and frightened by the mysterious message.

  109. Although this transmission was widely passed off as a hoax 
  110. perpetrated by a high spirited student, a TVS official was later 
  111. forced to admit that "our engineers are trying to discover exactly 
  112. what happened. We can't imagine how it was done, but it appears 
  113. that someone must have managed to transmit a signal directly over 
  114. ours.  The equipment used would need to be very sophisticated and 
  115. expensive.".  So did the authorities, via the media, try to 
  116. suppress this story by claiming it was a hoax?  I must admit that 
  117. it could certainly be seen that way by many of the conspiracy 
  118. lobby.  Broadcasting on any commercial frequency without permission
  119. is a serious offense in the UK, but despite an extensive police 
  120. investigation no one was ever suspected, let alone charged for the
  121. offense, and hardly any mention of this bizarre message has ever 
  122. been repeated.
